Comment:
At the 2019 election, the Coalition polled 2.51 quotas, while Labor polled 2.18 quotas. The Coalition will probably win three seats and Labor
two, unless there is a big swing to Labor. Labor has not won three seats at a half-Senate election in Victoria since 2007. Liberal Senator Scott
Ryan resigned in October 2021, leaving both a casual vacancy and a winnable third place spot on the Coalition ticket. In November the Liberals
chose Greg Mirabella, husband of former MP Sophie Mirabella, to fill both.
On the Labor side, Senator Kimberley Kitching of the Labor Right,
who was expected to head the ticket, died suddenly on 10 March. Shortly after, veteran Senator Kim Carr, from the Left, announced his retirement.
Labor's National Executive then chose Linda White, a former official with the Australian Services Union, to replace Carr, and Jana Stewart, a clinical
family therapist, public servant and adviser, to replace Kitching.
The Greens polled 0.74 quotas in 2019.
Victoria is now the Greens' strongest state, and Senator Lidia Thorpe seems likely to be re-elected.
