KINGDOM OF TONGA LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS OF 17 MARCH 2005 ======================================================================= Elections to the Fale Alea (Legislative Assembly) Source: Matangi Tonga Online The Legislative Assembly has 30 members, of whom 12 are cabinet ministers appointed by the king, nine are representatives of the country's 33 nobles, and nine are elected by the people for three-year terms. There are no formal political parties in Tonga, but the Human Rights and Democracy Movement In Tonga (HRDMT) campaigns for the establishment of a democratic system. The results posted by Matangi Tonga Online do not identify candidates by party. Seven of the nine elected members were supported by the HRDMT. The two members elected at Vava'u were the exceptions.
