SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO KOSOVO AUTONOMOUS REGION LEGISLATIVE ELECTION OF 17 NOVEMBER 2001 ==================================================================== Source: OSCE website Introduction -------------------------------------------------------------------- Kosovo is technically an Autonomous Region of the Republic of Serbia, which is part of the federation of Serbia and Montenegro (formerly called the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia). In 1999 the then Yugoslav regime attempted to expel the entire majority ethnic Albanian population from the region. This led to international intervention and the placing of the region under the administration of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). The long-term future of the region is yet to be determined. The November 2001 elections were for an Assembly of 120 members. The Assembly elects a President and has a defined area of legislative competence under the UNMIK administration. One hundred Assembly members are elected at large by proportional representation. Ten seats are reserved for the Serb minority, and another ten for other ethnic communities: Roma (Gypsies) four, Bosniaks three, Turks two and Goranis (Kurds) one.
