VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTIETH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 2 MARCH 1985 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 2 March 1985 to 13 October 1988 Voting figures are taken from “Statistics Relating to the General Election Held on Saturday the 2nd March, 1985,” Government Printer Melbourne 1985. John Cain's Labor government was re-elected at this election - the first time Labor had ever won two successive Victorian elections. Labor's share of the vote was unchanged at just over 50%*, but the Liberal and National parties both increased their votes, aided by the decision of the Australian Democrats and the DLP not to contest lower-house seats. The 1984 redistribution had enlarged the Legislative Assembly to 88 members, thus allowing the creation of more suburban seats without abolishing any country ones. In summary, Labor made a net gain of four seats, the Liberals a net gain of three. Nine Labor seats were abolished (Ascot Vale, Bendigo, Frankston, Geelong East, Geelong West, Glenhuntly, Glenroy, Heatherton, Noble Park), and 13 new Labor seats were created (Bellarine, Bendigo West, Clayton, Dandenong North, Derrimut, Doveton, Frankston North, Geelong, Mornington, Pascoe Vale, St Albans, Thomastown, Whittlesea). Two Liberal seats were abolished (Midlands, Westernport), and five new Liberal seats were created (Bendigo East, Bulleen, Frankston South, Gippsland West, Glen Waverley). In addition, two seats were changed from Liberal to Labor (Mentone, Wantirna), and two from Labor to Liberal (Prahran, Sandringham). No changes were made to the National Party's seats (which meant of course that the Nationals' share of seats was reduced). The notional position before the 1985 election was therefore Labor 53 (up 4), Liberal 27 (up 3), National 8. At the election, the Liberals won six seats from Labor (Bennettswood, Dromana, Evelyn, Ivanhoe, Mornington, Syndal), while losing two to the National Party (Swan Hill, Warrnambool). Notional two-party majorities based on the new boundaries are taken from The Age, 4 March 1985. * Labor polled 50.008% of the primary vote, compared with 50.006% in 1982. This is the best primary vote ever attained by Labor in a Victorian state election, though Labor would have polled better in 1952 if all seats had been contested.
