VICTORIA ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-SIXTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 21 OCTOBER 1920 ==================================================================== Showing ministerial and parliamentary offices held in the period 21 October 1920 and 30 August 1921 Voting figures are taken from "Votes and Proceedings of the Legislative Assembly." Party affiliations are taken from "The Argus." Harry Lawson's Nationalist government lost 13 seats and its overall majority, and found itself dependent on the support of the VFU to retain government. The VFU leader, John Allan, had no liking for the Nationalists, and some of his members were strongly opposed to supporting a Nationalist government. In July 1921 the VFU withdrew its support over Lawson's determination to abolish the compulsory wheat pool set up during World War I. Lawson called a snap election to resolve the impasse. SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Voters enrolled: 868,848 Total votes cast: 468,275 53.9 Informal votes: 20,593 04.4 Formal votes 447,682 95.6 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nationalist 221,211 49.4 -09.0 30 -13 Victorian Farmers Union 65,400 14.4 +08.3 13 +09 Labor Party 131,083 29.3 -03.0 20 +02 Others 29,988 06.7 2 +02 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 447,682 65 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ten members were returned unopposed, six Labor, three Nationalist and one VFU. This substantially reduced statewide turnout. It also reduced the Labor statewide vote, particularly since five seats were contested only by two or more Nationalists.
