Southern Metropolitan Region
The Southern Metropolitan Region takes in an expanse of Melbourne suburbs to the east and south of the city centre,
from Kew in the north to Beaumaris in the south, and from Port Melbourne in the west to Clayton in the east. It is
mostly middle-class, but includes most of Melbourne's wealthiest areas (Brighton, Kew, Malvern, Toorak), as well as some
lower-income areas (mainly around Oakleigh). Of the eleven lower house seats that make up the Region, Labor holds
three (Albert Park, Bentleigh and Oakleigh), and the Greens very narrowly hold Prahran. The other seven are held by
the Liberals, mostly by wide margins.
Not surprisingly, the Liberals have usually dominated this Region. At the 2006 election, they only won two
seats, to Labor's two and the Greens' one, but in 2010 the Liberals won a third seat at Labor's expense, and retained it
in 2014.
Philip Dalidakis, who was elected in 2014, became Minister for Trade and Investment, Innovation and the Digital
Economy, and Small Business in July 2015, following the resignation of Adem Somyurek. David Davis was Minister for Health
in the Baillieu and Napthine govbernments and is now Shadow Minister for Public Transport. Georgie Crozier is Shadow
Minister for Families and Children, Prevention of Family Violence, and Housing. Margaret Fitzherbert is Shadow Assistant
Minister for Health.
