TASMANIA ==================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 9 MARCH 1900 ==================================================================== The Thirteenth Parliament was opened on 24 April 1900 and expired on 11 March 1903 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Figures are taken from Hughes and Graham, "Voting for the South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian lower houses, 1890- 1964." Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Preference distributions in Hobart and Launceston are taken from the Hobart Mercury and the Launceston Examiner respectively. I have checked the figures in Hughes and Graham against the newspaper reports, which has enabled me to correct a number of errors. Where there are only minor differences between Hughes and Graham's figures and the newspaper figures, I have used Hughes and Graham. I have calculated all percentages myself, since there are numerous errors in Hughes and Graham. Unfortunately, Hughes and Graham give only candidate initials. Candidate full names have been sourced from newspaper reports. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Lewis Ministry returned with 18 supporters, faced by nine Opposition supporters and ten unaligned members. This enabled Lewis to hold office with an unchanged ministry until the 1903 election. The continued rapid growth of the mining towns on the west coast of Tasmania led to the abolition of Montagu and the creation of two new Districts, Lyell and Zeehan. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== The number of enrolled voters in each district is taken from Hughes and Graham. The total enrolment for the colony was 39,002. The average enrolment was therefore 1,054. The largest enrolment for a single-member district was 3,200 at Lyell, and the smallest was 352 at Cressy. Party alignments of candidates are taken from Hughes and Graham.
