TASMANIA ==================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE ELEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 19 DECEMBER 1893 ==================================================================== The Eleventh Parliament was opened on 27 February 1894 and expired on 31 December 1896 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Figures are taken from Hughes and Graham, "Voting for the South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian lower houses, 1890- 1964." Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. I have checked the figures in Hughes and Graham against the newspaper reports, which has enabled me to correct a number of errors. Where there are only minor differences between Hughes and Graham's figures and the newspaper figures, I have used Hughes and Graham. I have calculated all percentages myself, since there are numerous errors in Hughes and Graham. Unfortunately, Hughes and Graham give only candidate initials. Candidate full names have been sourced from newspaper reports. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The election returned 17 supporters of the Dobson ministry, 10 supporters of the opposition, and nine unaligned members. In April 1894 Dobson was defeated in a vote on the land tax bill, and resigned. Sir Edward Braddon then formed a ministry which survived until the 1897 election. Voting for the bill: Barrett, N Brown, Burke, Crisp, Davies, Dobson, Gilmore, Hartnoll, Henry, Leatham, Lewis, Macdonald, Mackenzie, Murray, Sutton, Von Stieglitz, Woollnough (17) Voting against the bill: Archer, Braddon, Bradley, W Brown, Cameron, Clark, Dumaresq, Fenton, Gill, Hamilton, Hiddlestone, McWilliams, Miles, Mulcahy, Piesse, Pillinger, Reibey, Urquhart (18) The rapid growth of the mining towns on the west coast of Tasmania led to the creation of a new District of Montagu. The election of a member for this District was held in February 1894. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== The number of enrolled voters in each district is taken from Hughes and Graham.
