TASMANIA ==================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 22 MAY 1891 ==================================================================== The Tenth Parliament was opened on 8 July 1891 and was dissolved on 2 December 1893. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the first Tasmanian election covered by the publications of Colin Hughes and B D Graham. Figures are taken from "Voting for the South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian lower houses, 1890-1964." Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. I have checked the figures in Hughes and Graham against the newspaper reports, which has enabled me to correct a number of errors. Where there are only minor differences between Hughes and Graham's figures and the newspaper figures, I have used Hughes and Graham. I have calculated all percentages myself, since there are numerous errors in Hughes and Graham. Unfortunately, Hughes and Graham give only candidate initials. Candidate full names have been sourced from newspaper reports. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fysh ministry survived the election, returning with 16 supporters, to 14 Opposition members and 6 uncommitted members. In August 1892 the ministry was defeated on a vote of confidence, by 19 votes to 15. Henry Dobson, who had been an MHA for only a year, then formed a ministry. In November 1893, the government's land tax bill was defeated in the Legislative Council, and Dobson called an early election. James Hall (Hobart West) and Allan Macdonald (Launceston South) ran as independent Labour candidates, although there was no official Labour party in Tasmania. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== The number of enrolled voters in each district is taken from Hughes and Graham. The total enrolment for the colony was 30,875. The average enrolment was therefore 858. The largest enrolment was 2,132 at Devon East and the smallest was 310 at Cressy. Party alignments of candidates are taken from Hughes and Graham. BRIGHTON ==================================================================== Enrolled voters: 739 Total votes cast: 545 73.7 Informal votes: 11 02.0 Formal votes: 534 98.0 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas DILLON Ministerial 375 70.2 Henry Johnson 30 05.6 Henry B Mugliston * Opposition 129 24.2 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 534 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hughes and Graham give both Johnson and Mugliston 129 votes, which is clearly an error. The correct figures are in the Hobart Mercury, 23 May. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Henry Boyes Mugliston (dates unknown): Elected 1886. Defeated 1891 Date of death unknown -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas Dillon (dates unknown): Elected 1891 Career: Unknown. He was described as "being one of the largest ratepayers," and as having been a member of the Municipal Council. (Hobart Mercury 22 May 1891) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dillon's election was overturned by the Supreme Court on 25 July, on the grounds of bribery: see by-election. -------------------------------------------------------------------- CAMPBELL TOWN ==================================================================== Enrolled voters: 434 Total votes cast: 314 72.4 Informal votes: 6 01.9 Formal votes: 308 98.1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- William H BENNETT * Opposition 179 58.1 Robert J Jones Ministerial 129 41.9 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 308 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hughes and Graham give the total vote as 313 and informal votes as 6. That would leave the formal vote as 307 whereas in fact it was 308. I cannot determine which figure is incorrect. -------------------------------------------------------------------- William Henry Bennett (1843-1929): Elected 1889 by, 1891 -------------------------------------------------------------------- CRESSY ==================================================================== Enrolled voters: 310 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Edmund H SUTTON * Ministerial Unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- Edmund Henry Sutton (1838-93): Elected 1886, 1891 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sutton voted with the Opposition on the no-confidence vote in August 1892. -------------------------------------------------------------------- CUMBERLAND ==================================================================== Enrolled voters: 1,754 Total votes cast: 742 42.3 Informal votes: 16 02.2 Formal votes: 726 97.8 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hon Nicholas J BROWN * Opposition 437 60.2 J M Haslett Ministerial 289 39.8 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 726 -------------------------------------------------------------------- At the 1886 election there were 541 voters enrolled in Cumberland.
