TASMANIA ==================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 26 JULY 1886 ==================================================================== The Ninth Parliament was opened on 24 August 1886 and was dissolved on 30 April 1891. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Newspaper reports, Tasmanian Parliament website, Bennett and Bennett Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1886 a redistribution bill was passed, increasing the size of the House of Assembly from 32 to 36, widening the franchise, and creating a distribution of seats with more equal enrolments, although there were still wide disparities. The five Hobart electorates were regrouped into three, electing two members each. Likewise the three Launceston electorates were regrouped into two, electing two members each. In the Hobart suburbs Queenborough was abolished but Kingborough was given a second member. Devon East and Wellington on the north-west coast were also given second members. A new seat of Ringarooma was created in the north-east. Morven was renamed Evandale, Norfolk Plains was renamed Longford and Ringwood was renamed Cressy. Clarence was abolished. For the first time, all elections were held on the same day. Nominations closed on 17 July and polling took place on 26 July. Consequently, I will no longer give newspaper references for each result. All results were reported in the Hobart Mercury in the days following the election. Dr James Agnew MLC retained office until March 1887, when he resigned due to internal differences in the Cabinet. The opposition leader Edward Braddon ceded the premiership to Philip Fysh, who then formed his second ministry, which held office until the 1891 election. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== The number of enrolled voters in each district is taken from an article in the Hobart Mercury, 29 June 1886. The total enrolment for the colony was 25,078. The average enrolment was therefore 697. The largest enrolment was 1,081 at Glenorchy and the smallest was 271 at Cressy. I have not been able to locate a table showing the party alignments of members elected at this election. I have taken as a surrogate for this the vote on the motion of no confidence in the House of Assembly on 11 November 1886. I have classed the 13 who supported the motion as Opposition members and the 18 who opposed it as Ministerial members. Four members (plus the Speaker) did not take part in the vote.
