The election returned 16 Ministerial members, 15 Opposition members and the Speaker. This finely-balanced House led to four changes of ministry and consequently to 21 by-elections during this Parliament. Thomas Reiby resigned in August 1877 and was succeeded by Philip Fysh, then by William Giblin in March 1878, by William Crowther in December 1878 and by Giblin again in October 1879. Giblin's second ministry proved stable and held office until the May 1882 election.
