QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTY-FIFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 31 JANUARY 2015 ==================================================================== The Fifty-Fifth Parliament was opened on 24 March 2015 and dissolved on 29 October 2017. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Election Commission of Queensland, Queensland Parliament website Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Annastacia Palaszczuk led Labor back into government at this election after only one term in opposition, defeating Campbell Newman's Liberal National government. Labor entered the campaign holding nine seats, and gained 37, to finish with 44, one short of a majority. Palaszczuk formed a minority government with the support of the independent member Peter Wellington, who became Speaker. Newman's defeat was attributed to his government's austerity policies, particularly its heavy cuts to the public service, and to his own autocratic and confrontational style. He was defeated at Ashgrove, only the second Queensland Premier to lose his seat. Three of his ministers and six assistant ministers were also defeated. Newman was succeeded as Liberal National leader by Lawrence Springborg, who had already been Leader of the Opposition twice and had lost three elections to Labor. In May 2016 Springborg was deposed and succeeded by Tim Nicholls. Of the 34 Labor members defeated in 2012, only six were re-elected at this election: Cameron Dick, Di Farmer, Grace Grace, Stirling Hinchliffe, Kate Jones and Mark Ryan. Palaszczuk's ministry included five members newly elected to Parliament.
