QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTY-FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 24 MARCH 2012 ==================================================================== The Fifty-Fourth Parliament was opened on 15 May 2012 and dissolved on 6 January 2015 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Election Commission of Queensland, Queensland Parliament website Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Liberal National Party led by Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman won the most comprehensive victory in Queensland history at this election, routing Anna Bligh's demoralised Labor government. The Liberal National Party won 78 seats out of 89, surpassing even Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen's victory in 1974. Eleven Cabinet ministers and five assistant ministers were defeated. Of the Labor front bench, only the Premier and three of her Cabinet colleagues (Mulherin, Palaszczuk and Pitt) survived. Labor's defeat was not a surprise after 14 years in office. But the defeat was made much worse by the widespread criticism of Bligh for breaking her 2009 campaign pledge not to privatise state assets. She resigned from Parliament immediately after the election. She was succeeded as Labor leader by Annastacia Palaszczuk, who apologised for the Bligh government's broken promises. Newman was not a Member of Parliament when he was elected Liberal National leader in April 2011. At the election he contested the seat of Ashgrove, defeating sitting member and minister Kate Jones. His lack of parliamentary experience was one of the reasons for his performance as Premier, which was described as bullying, confrontational and divisive. Despite its huge majority, the Newman government's popularity quickly waned. At two by-elections in 2014, the Liberal Nationals suffered swings of 17 and 19%.
