QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 21 MARCH 2009 ==================================================================== The Fifty-Third Parliament was opened on 12 April 2009 and dissolved on 19 February 2012 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Election Commission of Queensland, Queensland Parliament website Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Anna Bligh led Labor to its eighth consecutive victory at this election, becoming the first female Premier to win a state election. Although Labor lost ground in both votes and seats, this was a considerable achievement after eleven years in government and the loss of Peter Beattie's personal popularity. The LNP gained a swing of over 4% in two-party terms and made a gain of 8 seats relative to the 2006 election and 12 seats relative to the position after the 2008 redistribution, which had been favourable to Labor. Bligh's success was short-lived. Three months after the election, she announced that the government would privatise state assets including the Port of Brisbane and parts of state railways network. This was widely seen as a breach of Bligh's election promises and her support collapsed. Her strong performance during the disastrous 2011 Queensland floods brought a brief revival, but by 2012 it was obvious that Labor was heading for defeat. Laurence Springborg resigned as LNP Leader after the election and was succeeded by John-Paul Langbroek. Langbroek was deposed in March 2011, at a time when it seemed that Bligh's propsects were improving following the floods. The party then drafted Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman as Leader. Since Newman was not a member of Parliament, Jeff Seeney was nominally Leader of the Opposition until the 2012 election. The 2008 redistribution abolished the LNP seats of Charters Towers, Cunningham, Darling Downs and Robina, the Labor seats of Fitzroy, Kurwongbah and Mount Gravatt, and the One Nation seat of Tablelands. It created four new LNP seats: Buderim, Condamine, Dalrymple and Mermaid Beach, and four new Labor seats: Coomera, Morayfield, Pine Rivers and Sunnybank. The LNP seats of Burdekin, Clayfield and Mirani were made notionally Labor. The notional position after the redistribution was therefore Labor 63 (up 4), LNP 22 (down 3), One Nation nil (down 1), independent 4.
