QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTY-SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 9 SEPTEMBER 2006 ==================================================================== The Fifty-Second Parliament was opened on 10 October 2006 and dissolved on 23 February 2009 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- Election Commission of Queensland, Queensland Parliament website Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Beattie led Labor to its fourth successive election victory at this election, losing only four seats to retain a comfortable majority, and suffering almost no loss in its primary vote. One Nation retained its one seat, and four of the five independents were re-elected. The Nationals and Liberals both gained votes, mainly because of the further decline of One Nation. Lawrence Springborg resigned as Nationals leader after the election, and was replaced by Jeff Seeney. Liberal leader Dr Bruce Flegg also resigned, and was succeeded by Mark McArdle. But in January 2008 Springborg reclaimed the Nationals leadership, and then negotiated a merger with the Liberals to form the Liberal National Party, of which he became leader. Beattie quit politics in September 2007, and was suuceeded by Anna Bligh, who became Queensland's first female Premier.
