QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 12 NOVEMBER 1977 ==================================================================== The Forty-Second Parliament was opened on 28 March 1978 and dissolved on 27 October 1980. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 27 April 1978. This report includes enrolment figures, lists of polling places, and full names and party affiliations of candidates. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joh Bjelke-Petersen led the National and Liberal parties to their eighth straight victory at this election, winning a substantial majority of the vote (52.3%) and a large majority of seats (59 of 82 for Labor). Labor staged a modest recovery from the debacle of 1974, gaining 12 seats, but not enough to pose any real challenge to the Coalition. The Coalition parties retained seven seats with margins of less than 2%. Rapid population growth in south-east Queensland had led to a redistribution in 1977, only six years after the previous one. Three Liberal seats in inner Brisbane (Baroona, Belmont and Clayfield) were abolished, and three new seats were created: Calboolture and Woodridge in the outer suburbs and Southport on the Gold Coast. Since Caboolture and Southport were notionally National Party seats, this in effect transferred two seats from the Liberals to the Nationals. Brisbane was renamed Brisbane Central. Few country seats were affected. Belyando was renamed Peak Downs. The biggest swings against the Coalition were mostly in Liberal-held seats in and around Brisbane: 15.0% in Ipswich, 13.6% in Ashgrove, 12.8% in Toowong, 12.6% in Wavell, 12.4% in Stafford, 11.6% in Aspley. As a result, the Nationals for the first time outpolled the Liberals, despite losing two seats on the Gold Coast to them. Alarmed at this development, Liberal members began demanding a more assertive role in their relations with the Nationals. In October 1978 they deposed their leader Bill Knox, who was seen as too accommodating to Bjelke-Petersen, and replaced him with Dr Llew Edwards. Labor leader Tom Burns resigned in November 1978 and was succeeded by Ed Casey, who had survived the wipeout of 1974 by winning Mackay as an independent, and rejoined Labor in 1977. The Australian Democrats, in their first outing in Queensland, contested 13 seats, polling an average of 10.3%. Their best result was 18.6% at Toowong. The right-wing Progress Party contested 28 seats, polling an average of 5.0%. Their best result was 11.3% at Condamine.
