QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FORTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 7 DECEMBER 1974 ==================================================================== The Forty-First Parliament was opened on 25 February 1975 and dissolved on 10 October 1977. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 24 February 1975. This report includes enrolment figures, lists of polling places, and full names and party affiliations of candidates. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The National and Liberal parties, led by Joh Bjelke-Petersen and Gordon Chalk, won a crushing victory at this election. The Coalition parties won 58.5% of the vote and 69 of 82 seats, a gain of 22 seats at the expense of Labor, who were left with only 11 seats. Bjelke- Petersen campaigned more against the Whitlam federal Labor government than against Queensland Labor, and showed again that he had accurately read the mood of the electorate. The Liberals again outpolled the Nationals, but were unable to overcome the malapportionment that gave the Nationals more seats, despite the Liberal sweep of the Brisbane area. The Nationals' win in Wynnum, a suburban seat, was a warning to the Liberals. Labor's 36.3% of the vote was its lowest since the disaster year of 1957, but its share of seats (13.4%) was the worst since the party's emergence in the 1890s. This reflected the final loss of all the outback seats which had once been monopolised by Labor. Labor lost Mt Isa, held under various names since 1907, and Warrego, held since 1908. Only the Rockhampton area resisted the Coalition tide. Labor was left with six Brisbane seats, three Rockhampton seats, Bundaberg and Cairns. The DLP vote collapsed, reflecting the party's wipeout at the May 1974 federal election. This was the party's last Queensland election. Labor leader Percy Tucker lost his seat. He was succeeded by Tom Burns, a former Labor federal president. Liberal leader Sir Gordon Chalk retired in August 1976, and was succeeded by Bill Knox.
