QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 17 MAY 1969 ==================================================================== The Thirty-Ninth Parliament was opened on 5 August 1969 and dissolved on 18 April 1972. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 31 October 1969. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. For the first time it also includes full names and party affiliations of all candidates. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Joh Bjelke-Petersen led the Coalition parties to a fifth consecutive victory at this election, sustaining only minor losses. Although Labor polled more primary votes than the Coalition, DLP preferences enabled the Coalition parties to retain nearly all their marginal seats. Labor gained five seats, but two of these (Bundaberg and Cook) were vacant following the retirement of independent members. In 1970 the Liberals won Albert from the Country Party at a by- election. In July 1971 Bjelke-Petersen declared a state of emergency in response to protests against the touring South African rugby team. In the same month two by-elections saw swings to the Liberals, with the Liberals gaining Maryborough from Labor. The results were attributed to public support for the government's actions.
