QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-EIGHTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 28 MAY 1966 ==================================================================== The Thirty-Eighth Parliament was opened on 2 August 1966 and dissolved on 8 April 1969. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 1 December 1966. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names of candidates are from the "Queensland Government Gazette," 25 June 1966. Party affiliations are from Hughes and Graham. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Frank Nicklin's Coalition government easily won a fourth term at this election, with no change to the party positions in terms of votes or seats. Only two seats changed hands, and they cancelled each other out. The Liberal vote rose slightly, at the expense of the Country Party, as a result of the Liberals contesting some Country Party seats. Nicklin retired in February 1968 after a record ten years as Premier. He was succeeded by his deputy, Jack Pizzey, but Pizzey died suddenly in July. The Liberal leader Gordon Chalk then formed an interim government while the Country Partty chose a new leader. This was the relatively unknown Johannes (Joh) Bjelke-Petersen. The Coalition received a shock when Labor won the by-election caused by Pizzey's death. Opposition Leader Jack Duggan resigned after losing his fourth successive election. He was the last Labor member with ministerial experience. He was succeeded by Jack Houston.
