QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-FORTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 19 MAY 1956 ==================================================================== The Thirty-Fourth Parliament was opened on 31 July 1956 and dissolved on 13 June 1957. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 24 October 1956. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names of candidates are from the "Queensland Government Gazette," 9, 16, 23 and 30 June 1956. Party affiliations are from the "Central Queensland Herald," 24 May 1956. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Premier Vince Gair led Labor to a second convincing win at this election, delivering his party an unprecedented ninth consecutive victory. Despite a substantial swing against it, labor lost only one seat to the opposition parties. This was mainly because the Liberal Party, despite gaining swings of up to 8% in the metropolitan seats, failed to win any of them from Labor. Labor also held on to all but one of its marginal country seats. Gair's achievement was even more striking because the Labor Party was in disarray nationally, having suffered a severe split in Victoria and been heavily defeated in the 1955 federal and Victorian elections. U ntil 1957 Gair succeeded in insulating the Queensland party against these divisions. In early 1957 the Queensland Central Executive of the Labor Party, dominated by an alliance between the left-wing industrial unions and the right-wing Australian Workers Union, demanded that the government implement the party's policy of three weeks annual leave for workers on state awards. Gair refused on the grounds that the state could not afford it, and also insisted the the QCE had no right to dictate to an elected Labor government. As a result he was expelled from the party in April 1957. All but one of the Cabinet, and 24 of the 49 members elected in 1956, were expelled along with him. Jack Duggan, the only Cabinet member not to support Gair, was elected Labor leader following the expulsions. Frank Nicklin remained unchallenged as Country Party leader and Opposition Leader, while Ken Morris remained Liberal leader. In June Labor joined with the opposition parties in passing a no-confidence motion against the Gair government. Gair then called an election for 3 August.
