QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 7 MARCH 1953 ==================================================================== The Thirty-Third Parliament was opened on 1 August 1950 and dissolved on 6 February 1953. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 20 August 1953. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Telegraph", 13 February 1953. This list, like those published in other newspapers, gave only candidates' initials, not their full names. During February "The Worker" published election notices giving candidates' full names for most seats. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Led by Premier Vince Gair, Labor had a sweeping victory at this election, gaining eight seats and polling a clear majority of votes. This was Labor’s best result since 1938, and a remarkable achievement for a party which had been in government for 20 years and was seeking an eighth term in office. Although the Country Party lost 5 seats to the Liberals’ 3, the Liberals suffered bigger swings against them: they retained 3 of their 8 seats with margins of less than 2%. Labor continued to benefit from the effects of the 1949 redistribution, winning all 10 of the small western seats and 10 of the 13 northern seats. But Labor also won 17 of the 24 metropolitan seats. Labor’s success was due at least in part to the unpopularity of the Menzies-Fadden federal coalition government. On the same day as this election, Labor had its best result in South Australia since the 1930s, and in December 1952 had won majority government in Victoria for the first time. Labor was widely expected to win the 1954 federal election. When it failed to do so, a split developed in the federal Caucus and in Victoria. Premier Gair, in alliance with Catholic Archbishop James Duhig, prevented the split from spreading to Queensland. Despite having lost four successive elections in twelve years, Frank Nicklin was unchallenged as Country Party leader and Opposition Leader during this Parliament. Tom Hiley resigned as Liberal Leader in August 1954 and was succeeded by Ken Morris.
