QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTIETH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 15 APRIL 1944 ==================================================================== The Thirtieth Parliament was opened on 1 August 1944 and dissolved on 21 March 1947. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 8 August 1944. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Courier-Mail", 4 March 1944. Unfortunately this list, like those published in other newspapers, gave only candidates' initials, not their full names. I have sourced these from local newspaper reports, and (for those elected) from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Frank Cooper led Labor to its fifth consecutive victory at this election, although Labor lost both votes and seats to the QPP and independents. The Labor vote fell 7.5%, but this was partly due to six Labor members being elected unopposed. Labor lost two seats to the QPP, one to the Communist Party and three to independents (all dissident former Labor members), while winning one from the QPP and one from the Country Party. Cooper, who had already been 70 when he became Premier, bowed out in March 1946 and was succeeded by his deputy, Ned Hanlon: the first Labor Premier to hold a Brisbane seat. The big winners were the QPP, whose vote rose sharply (partly as a result of contesting more seats) and who made a net gain of four seats. But the serious disparity in enrolments between country and metropolitan seats* meant that the Country Party remained the largest opposition party and Frank Nicklin remained Opposition Leader. John Chandler resigned as QPP leader in 1946 and was succeeded by Bruce Pie. The Communist Party was at the peak of its wartime popularity at this election, due to public admiration for the Soviet Union. The party contested only five seats, but it polled more than 20% of the vote in four of them, all the north, and Fred Paterson won Bowen: the only Communist ever elected to an Australian parliament. In March 1946 Labor gained East Toowoomba from the Country Party at a by-election, suggesting that Labor support was still strong. * At this election the Country Party won its 12 seats with an average of 6,967 votes, while the QPP won its 8 seats with an average of 16,634 votes.
