QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-NINTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 29 MARCH 1941 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Ninth Parliament was opened on 20 August 1941 and dissolved on 23 February 1944. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 21 August 1941. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Courier-Mail", 8 March 1941, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Labor under Forgan Smith won a fourth successive victory at this election, regaining most of the vote lost in 1938, but suffering a net loss of three seats. The Country Party vote fell but it lost no seats. The UAP vote rose and it gained one seat. All three parties benefited from the disappearance of Social Credit and the near- disappearance of Protestant Labour. Only the Communists* were left to challenge Labor in its safer seats. Smith resigned undefeated in September 1942, after ten years as Premier. He was at that time Queenland's longest-serving Premier, a title he retained until 1967, when he was over-taken by Frank Nicklin. He was succeeded by his deputy, Frank Cooper, who made few changes to the cabinet he inherited and took Labor to the 1944 election. After the election the Country Party and the United Australia Party merged to become the Country-National Organisation (CNO), the UAP leader Hugh Russell having lost his seat. In June the Country Party leader Ted Maher resigned, and Frank Nicklin was elected leader of the new party. The merger did not stick, however, and in October 1943 UAP members in Brisbane, led by the Lord Mayor, John Chandler, formed the Queensland People's Party. The CNO was dissolved and Nicklin remained as leader of the Country Party. In 1942 Labor lost a by-election at Cairns to an independent, partly because a Communist candidate polled 25% of the vote but did not direct preferences to Labor. The government then passed a bill to abolish contingent voting, which had never been popular with parties or voters. Labor hoped this would exacerbate the problems of the two non-Labor parties, since they would no longer be able to run two candidates in any given seat. (See Mackay by-election for the immediate effect.) * The Communist Party was illegal at this time as a result of the Soviet alliance with Germany. Communist candidates ran as "independent socialists", which no doubt helped them win more votes. I have identified candidates whom I know to have been Communist Party members as such. STATE SUMMARY OF VOTES AND SEATS ==================================================================== Enrolled voters: 634,916 Total votes counted: 529,247 83.3 Informal votes: 9,444 01.8 Formal votes: 519,803 98.2 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Party Votes % Seats -------------------------------------------------------------------- Communist Party 16,879 03.2 +01.6 - Country Party 104,541 20.1 -02.6 13 Labor Party 271,242 52.2 +05.0 41 -03 Protestant Labour 5,079 01.0 -07.7 - -01 United Australia Party 81,109 15.6 +02.2 4 +01 Others 40,953 07.9 4 +03 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 519,803 62 -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Four Labor members and one Country Party member were elected unopposed. * Labor lost Maree to the UAP, Sandgate to the Country Party and Bundaberg and Windsor to independents, but won Kelvin Grove from the Protestant Labour Party, and recovered Gregory, which had been lost to an independent at a 1939 by-election. * The UAP lost Hamilton to an independent, but recovered Toowong, where the independent elected in 2018 had joined the UAP. * The Country Party MLA for Cunningham was disendorsed but re-elected as an independent. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== Where there were more than two candidates, and where a third candidate polled more than 10% of the vote, I have given an estimated two-candidate majority. Other minor candidates have been ignored. Communist candidates have also been ignored, since the Communist Party advised its voters not to use the contingent vote (see for example Kurilpa).
