QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-EIGHTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 2 APRIL 1938 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Eighth Parliament was opened on 9 August 1938 and dissolved on 26 February 1941. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 23 August 1938. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Courier-Mail", 15 March 1938, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Forgan Smith led Labor to a third successive victory at this election, suffering a net loss of only two seats despite a substantial loss of votes, particularly in the Brisbane area seats. The two conservative parties gained only a slight increase in their joint vote and made no net gain in seats. Most of Labor's lost votes went to minor parties. Despite its easy win over the CP-UAP, Labor faced two serious challenges at this election. The Communist Party polled well in several seats, taking advantage of the Soviet Union's "united front against fascism" tactics in this period. The Protestant Labour Party was based on hostility to Irish Catholics, who were thought to be disloyal to the British Empire. The party won one seat at this election, but was moribund by 1941. (The Queensland Labor Cabinet in 1938 consisted of six Catholics, three Presbyterians and one Anglican. Queensland at the 1933 census was 19.6% Catholic.) On the conservative side, Social Credit candidates polled well in a number of Country Party seats. Despite the poor result for both the conservative parties, Ted Maher and Hugh Russell remained as leaders until the 1941 election. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== Where there were more than two candidates, and where a third candidate polled more than 10% of the vote, I have given an estimated two-candidate majority. Other minor candidates have been ignored. Communist candidates have also been ignored, since the Communist Party advised its voters not to use the contingent vote.
