QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-SEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 11 MAY 1935 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Seventh Parliament was opened on 26 August 1935 and dissolved on 5 March 1938. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 12 September 1935. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Standard", 17 April 1935, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Forgan Smith led Labor to a crushing victory over the Country- Nationalists at this election, winning 53.6% of the vote and a massive 46 to 16 seat majority. The Country-Nationalists were reduced to a block of farming seats in the south-east and a few upper-income seats in Brisbane. Labor won all the seats in north and west Queensland and all the provincial city seats, as well as most of the Brisbane seats. The election was preceded by another redistribution, designed to reverse the effects of the Moore government's 1931 redistribution. One country seat, Murilla, was abolished, and a new city seat, Baroona, created. Labor's victory was mainly due to the state's robust recovery from the Depression, for which the Smith government of course claimed credit. But, as the conservative "Courier-Mail" conceded: "In respect of enthusiasm, energy, organising ability and skill in leadership, the victory went to the party which had earned it." In April 1936 the Country Progressive-Nationalist Party was dissolved, with 13 MLAs returning to the Country Party and three MLAs joining the United Australia Party (UAP). Arthur Moore continued as Country Party Leader until July, when he resigned and was succeeded by Edmund (Ted) Maher. Hugh Russell became Leader of the UAP. This substantially lowered both turnout and the Labor vote. * Labor won Carnarvon, Cook, East Toowoomba, Fitzroy, Gympie, Kennedy, Logan, Mirani, Sandgate, Warwick, Windsor and Wynnum from the Country-Nationalists. Labor also won the new seat of Baroona. * The Country-Nationalists regained Fassifern which had been won by an independent in 1932. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== 1. Changes in the party vote for each electorate take no account of the effects of the redistribution. 2. Where there were more than two candidates, and where a third candidate polled more than 10% of the vote, I have given an estimated two-candidate majority. Other minor candidates have been ignored.
