QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-SIXTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 11 JUNE 1932 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Sixth Parliament was opened on 15 August 1932 and dissolved on 9 April 1935. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 1 September 1932. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Telegraph", 28 April 1932, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1931 the Moore Government passed a redistribution bill that reduced the size of the Assembly from 72 to 62 members, requiring the abolition of ten seats. Abolished were the Country-Nationalist seats of Burnett, Burrum, Chillagoe, Eacham, Rosewood and Toombul, the Labor seats of Balonne, Burke, Flinders, Leichhardt, Mitchell, Mount Morgan, Paddington and Queenton, and the independent seat of Lockyer. Burke was renamed Carpentaria, Burrum was renamed Isis, Lockyer was renamed Western Downs and Toombul was renamed Hamilton. Chillagoe and Eacham were merged to become The Tableland. Forgan Smith led Labor back into office at this election, defeating Arthur Moore's Country-Nationalist government after only one term. Labor gained a 7% swing and made a net gain of six seats relative to the previous Assembly, while the Country-Nationalists took most of the losses from the reduction in the size of the Assembly, with a net loss of 14 seats. Labor was left with a narrow but workable majority of 33 seats to 29. The principal cause of Moore's defeat was of course the Great Depression, which overwhelmed him as it did every Australian government at this time. The cuts in government spending, including public servant salaries, produced a heavy swing against the Country- Nationalists in city seats. Moore had accepted the deflationary Premiers' Plan, while Smith campaigned against it. But after the election, as the sole surviving Labor premier, he was forced to accept its essentials. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== 1. Changes in the party vote for each electorate take no account of the effects of the redistribution. 2. Where there were more than two candidates, and where a third candidate polled more than 10% of the vote, I have given an estimated two-candidate majority. Other minor candidates have been ignored.
