QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-FIFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 11 MAY 1929 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Fifth Parliament was opened on 20 August 1929 and dissolved on 19 April 1932. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 3 September 1929. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names and party affiliations of candidates are from the list published in "The Queenslander", 25 April 1929, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Arthur Moore led the Country-Nationalists to an emphatic victory at this election, ending 14 years of Labor government. The Country- Nationalists won a clear majority of the vote, and won 43 seats, a gain of 16. Labor lost 15 seats to the Country-Nationalists, including strongholds such as Chillagoe, Gympie and Ipswich, and Rockhampton to an independent. Among the new members was Irene Longman (Bulimba), the first woman to contest a Queensland election. Labor was lucky to retain as many seats as it did, since it won seven seats with margins of less than 2%. Labor lost another seat shortly after the election when the Country-Nationalists won a by- election in Maryborough. Labor’s loss was partly due simply to its longevity in office, partly due to the failures of some its trademark policies such as state-owned enterprises, and partly due to suspicion of corruption (later proved to be correct) around Premier McCormack. He resigned immediately after the election and was succeeded as Labor leader by Forgan Smith. Five months after the election the Wall Street Crash triggered the Great Depression, which the Moore Government, like all Australian governments, was totally unequipped to meet. Moore subscribed to the Premiers' Plan, which prescribed cuts to government spending including pensions and public service pay. This soon made Moore very unpopular. As part of its economy drive, the government carried out a redistribution which reduced size of the Assembly from 72 to 62 members.
