QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 8 MAY 1926 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Fourth Parliament was opened on 28 July 1926 and dissolved on 11 April 1929. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 5 August 1926. This report includes enrolment figures and lists of polling places. * Full names of candidates are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Mail", 4 May 1926. Party affiliations are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Standard", 16 April 1926, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- William McCormack led Labor to its fifth successive victory at this election, with Labor winning the same number of seats as it did in 1923. The Country-Nationalists lost one seat to an independent. The Country-Nationalists were unlucky, since Labor retained five seats with majorities of 2% or less. The "Brisbane Courier" (a strongly anti-Labor paper then as now) wrote (10 May 1926): "For the first time for a considerable period the Opposition faced the country as a united party, but the unity had been brought about such a brief time prior to polling day, and had been preceded, and in some cases followed, by so much bickering, intrigue and recrimination, that the party was hamstrung by a strong undercurrent of dissatisfaction. . . There had been considerable talk of the supposed split in the Labor Party's ranks, but, as is usual at elections, the ranks of the party closed up and the voting was solid." There was no change to the leadership of either party during this parliament. Both McCormack and the Country-Nationalist leader Arthur Moore retained their positions until the 1929 election.
