QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 12 MAY 1923 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Third Parliament was opened on 11 July 1923 and dissolved on 8 April 1926. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 23 August 1923. This report includes enrolment figures for the first time. It also includes lists of polling places. * Names of candidates and their party affiliations are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Standard", 20 September 1923, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Led by Premier Ted Theodore, Labor won its fourth consecutive victory at this election. Helped by a favourable redistribution, Labor won 43 seats, a gain of five. The Country Party won 13, a loss of seven, while United Party won 16, a gain of three. No independents were elected. The September 1922 redistribution was the first since 1912. Four country seats, all won in 1920 by the Country Party, were abolished: Drayton, Kennedy, Musgrave and Pittsworth. Reflecting the rapid growth of suburban Brisbane, three new Brisbane seats were created: Kelvin Grove, Sandgate and Wynnum. A new seat of Kennedy was created in the Townsville area. The four new seats were contested between Labor and United, with Labor winning Kelvin Grove and Kennedy, and United the other two. The Country Party were thus the losers from the redistribution. (For a hostile commentary, see "Brisbane Courier", 14 May 1923.) In February 1925 Theodore resigned as Premier and Labor leader. In September he resigned his seat to enter federal politics, winning a by-election for the Sydney seat of Dalley. He went on to be Labor federal Deputy Leader and Treasurer in the Scullin Government. William Gillies was elected the new Labor leader and became Premier on 26 February. In October, however, Gillies resigned after conflicts with his colleagues and the unions. He was succeded by William McCormack, who took office on 22 October. He was the fourth Labor Premier in succession to hold a North Queensland seat. In July 1923 Vowles resigned as Country Party leader, and was succeeded by Arthur Moore. Since the United Party had won more seats than the Country Party (partly as a result of the redistribution), the United leader Charles Taylor became Leader of the Opposition. In April 1924, however, the two parties agreed to elect a joint leadership, and Moore was elected leader. In May 1925 the two parties formally merged, officially becoming the Country and Progressive Nationalist Party, a name usually shortened to Country- Nationalist.
