QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 9 OCTOBER 1920 ==================================================================== The Twenty-Second Parliament was opened on 15 November 1920 and dissolved on 12 April 1923. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 11 August 1921. * Enrolment numbers are from the list published in the Brisbane "Telegraph", 2 October 1920. These figures are same as those appearing in "Pugh's Almanac", 1921. They differ substantially from those in Hughes and Graham. I don't know where Hughes and Graham got their figures from. * Names of candidates and their party affiliations are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Standard", 20 September 1920, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. * The places of nomination for each electorate are from the list published in "The Week", 22 March 1912. Complete lists of polling places were given in "The Worker", 30 March and 6 April 1912. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Labor government led by Ted Theodore won this election with a reduced majority, losing six seats to the Country Party and four to the Nationalists. Labor was left with 38, a majority of two. This proved enough to keep Labor in office until the 1923 election. Labor polled less than 50% of the vote, but its strength in the small outback seats gave it a majority of seats. For the same reason, the Country Party won more seats than the Nationalists despite polling many fewer votes. This was a pattern that was to shape Queensland politics until the 1990s. The Country Party retained its position as the larger of the two opposition parties, and William Vowles remained as Leader of the Opposition. The Nationalist leader, Walter Barnes, resigned in May 1921 and was succeeded by Charles Taylor. In March 1923, following a convention in Rockhampton in January, the Nationalist Party changed its name to the United Party in the hope of bringing about a reunification of the opposition parties, but only one Country Party MLA (John G Appel) joined the new party. Taylor led the United Party into the 1923 election.
