QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 16 MARCH 1918 ==================================================================== The Twenty-First Parliament was opened on 28 May 1918 and dissolved on 10 September 1920 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Details of Polling at General Election", Ordered by the Legislative Assembly to be printed, 25 July 1918. * Enrollment numbers are from "Pugh's Almanac", 1920. * Names of candidates and their party affiliations are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Standard", 25 February 1918, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. * The places of nomination for each electorate are from the list published in "The Week", 22 March 1912. Complete lists of polling places were given in "The Worker", 30 March and 6 April 1912. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Premier Tom Ryan's Labor government was comfortably re-elected at this election, increasing its share of the vote and its number of seats. The opposition Nationalists also increased their share of votes and seats, but if the Nationalist totals are compared with those of the combined Liberal and Farmers' Union in 1915, it will be seen that the opposition actually lost ground. It was striking that all of Labor's gains were in country seats, while all the Nationalist gains were in Brisbane seats. The Labor press attributed the losses in the city to "the fact that Brisbane has been a garrison town the last three or four years. . . and therefore particularly susceptible to the Tory wiles of so-called nationalism, patriotism and sectarianism." ("Daily Standard", 1 April) In October 1919 Ryan resigned as Premier and went into federal politics, winning a by-election for the seat of West Sydney. The plan was that he would become federal Labor leader, but he died suddenly in August 1921. He was succeeded as Labor leader and Premier by the Treasurer, Ted Theodore. Edward Macartney resigned for the second time as Opposition Leader in January 1920 and was succeeded by William Vowles. In July 1920 the Nationalist party split, with Vowles leading the newly-formed Country Party. Walter Barnes led the remaining Nationalist MLAs. In 1918 the Queensland state convention of the Labor Party decided officially to adopt the spelling "Labor" already used by the federal party. That spelling is used here from now on.
