QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWENTIETH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 22 MAY 1915 ==================================================================== The Twentieth Parliament was opened on 12 July 1915 and dissolved on 14 February 1918. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Return to an Order relating to election statistics," a paper appended to "Votes and proceedings of the Legislative Assembly", 10th Parliament, 1st Session, 15 July 1915. This document gives voting figures but not names of candidates. * Names of candidates and their party affiliations are from the list published in the Brisbane "Daily Standard", 15 May 1915, from other newspaper reports, and from the Queensland Parliament website. * The places of nomination for each electorate are from the list published in "The Week", 22 March 1912. Complete lists of polling places were given in "The Worker", 30 March and 6 April 1912. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Digby Denham's Liberal government suffered a heavy defeat at this election, losing 20 seats to Labor and five to candidates of the Queensland Farmers' Union. Denham himself lost his seat, as did most of his ministers and his predecessor as conservative leader, Sir Robert Philp. Denham resigned at once and Tom Ryan formed Queensland's first majority Labour government. During 1916 and 1917 the Labour party split at federal level and in most of the states over the issue of conscription for World War I. Ryan was the only state premier to take a stand against Prime Minister Hughes and conscription. The split had almost no effect in Queensland. Only one Caucus member, John Adamson (Rockhampton), joined the newly-renamed Nationalist Party. Denham was succeeded as Liberal leader by Edward Macartney. He resigned due to ill-health in September 1915 and was succeeded by James Tolmie. In February 1918, shortly before the 1918 election, Macartney reclaimed the leadership. The party was renamed the Nationalist Party in June 1917. The Queensland Farmers' Union agreed to affiliate with the Nationalists. This was the first election at which voting was compulsory. The use of the contingent vote remained optional. This election saw seven successive Queensland premiers elected (Ryan, Theodore, Gillies, McCormack, Moore, Smith and Cooper), as well as seven successive Labour leaders (Bowman, Ryan, Theodore, Gillies, McCormack, Smith and Cooper).
