QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE NINETEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 27 APRIL 1912 ==================================================================== The Nineteenth Parliament was opened on 2 July 1912 and dissolved on 15 April 1915. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Return to Order: Analysis of Voting at General Election 1912," a paper appended to "Votes and proceedings of the Legislative Assembly", 19th Parliament, 1st Session, 4 July 1912. This document gives voting figures but not names of candidates. * Names of candidates and their party affiliations are from the list published in the "Brisbane Courier", 28 March 1912, and from the Queensland Parliament website. * The places of nomination for each electorate are from the list published in "The Week", 22 March 1912. Complete lists of polling places were given in "The Worker", 30 March and 6 April 1912. * This election was fought on new boundaries for the first time since 1878, following Kidston's "one vote, one value" legislation. There were 309,590 voters on the rolls, enrolled in 72 single-member electorates. The average enrolment was therefore 4,300. The highest enrolment was Brisbane (6,251), the lowest were Burke and Cook (3,132). Fifty-one electorates had enrolments within 500 voters of the average (that is, between 3,800 and 4,800). Fourteen electorates, all regional, had enrolments below 3,800. Ten electorates had enrolments over 4,800 – seven in Brisbane, plus Ipswich, Nanango and Townsville. * This election was almost entirely a contest between Liberal and Labor. Independent candidates contested only eight seats, winning only one (Burke). Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Digby Denham's Liberal Party won a comfortable victory at this election, making a net gain of five seats – two from Labour and three from independents. Denham's victory was widely attributed to his tough response of the general strike which had crippled Queensland for two months. Labour gained ground in the Brisbane seats but the Liberals dominated the regions. After the election David Bowman resigned as Labour leader, partly through ill-health but also because he was being overshadowed by Tom Ryan, a much better public speaker. Ryan succeeded him and proved an effective opposition leader. Denham's second term was marked by the outbreak of World War I, which compelled him to co-operate with the federal Labour government in imposing regulations on agriculture and trade. This fuelled resentment among farmers and undermined Denham's authority among country MLAs. In 1915 the Queensland Farmers' Union decided to run its own candidates in the next state election. With the abolition of two-member seats it becomes possible to create a table of statewide results.
