QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE EIGHTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 2 OCTOBER 1909 ==================================================================== The Eighteenth Parliament was opened on 2 November 1909 and dissolved on 15 March 1912 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from "Electors Voting at late Elections – Return to an Order", a paper appended to "Votes and proceedings of the Legislative Assembly", 18th Parliament, 1st Session, 26 November 1909. This document gives voting figures but not names of candidates. Votes for two-member seats come from "Pugh's Almanac" of 1915. * Names of candidates and their party affiliations are from the list published in the "Brisbane Courier", 15 September 1909, and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. * This was the last election at which two-member seats were used. * Results of the 1908 election are indicated only when there was a straight contest between Labor and non-Labor at that election. This is obviously not possible for two-member seats. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Premier William Kidston's newly-formed Liberal Party won a substantial majority at this election. The Liberals won 41 seats, a net loss of six compared to the combined total won by the Conservatives and Kidstonites in 1908. The Labour Party led by David Bowman won 27 seats, a net gain of four. Four independent Oppositionists were elected. During this Parliament Kidston enacted important electoral reforms, redistributing electorate boundaries, abolishing dual-member seats, and entrenching one vote one value, although this was later reversed. In February 1911 he left politics to become President of the Land Court. He was succeeded by Digby Denham, a more conservative Figure. In 1912 Denham faced a two-month general strike, to which he responded by calling an election in April 1912. Most of the Labour members who had followed Kidston out of the party were defeated at this election, including two former leaders, George Kerr and Peter Airey. Two future Labor Premiers, Tom Ryan and Ted Theodore, were elected. This was the first Queensland election to be fought mostly as a contest between two parties. Of the 52 contested seats, 36 (69.2%) were straight contests between Liberal and Labour. Five seats were contested between a Liberal and an independent, two between two Liberals, and one between Labour and an independent. Only eight seats (15.4%) saw three-sided contests.
