QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE SEVENTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 5 FEBRUARY 1908 ==================================================================== The Seventeenth Parliament was opened on 4 March 1908 and dissolved on 25 August 1909 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Queensland Legislative Assembly, 1890-1964", checked against "Pugh's Almanac" of 1909. The results are identical in almost every seat. It is clear that Hughes and Graham used Pugh as their source for this election. * Candidates' given names are from newspaper reports and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Premier Robert Philp's Conservative government, which had never had a majority in the Legislative Assembly, was defeated at this election. The Conservatives won 22 seats, a loss of seven. The Kidstonite opposition won 25, a gain of one, and Labour won 22, a gain of four. Philp resigned on 18 February and Kidston returned to office. At the declaration of his poll in Rockhampton, Kidston denounced the three-party system and announched his intention to create "a great Liberal Party." In October 1908 and Philp negotiated a merger to form the new party, with Kidston as leader. This created a two-party system in Queensland for the first time. At least seven of Kidson's erstwhile followers, including the former Labour leaders Peter Airey and George Kerr, rejected the merger, leaving his government with only a slender majority. In July 1909, Kidston won a confidence motion by one vote. He then called another election. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== At this election supporters of the Philp ministry are described as Conservatives, and supporters of the Kidston opposition are described as Oppositionists. I have noted those members elected as Kidston supporters who voted against his government in July 1909.
