QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE SIXTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 18 MAY 1907 ==================================================================== The Sixteenth Parliament was opened on 23 April 1907 and dissolved on 22 November 1907 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Queensland Legislative Assembly, 1890-1964", checked against "Pugh's Almanac" of 1904. The results are identical in almost every seat. It is clear that Hughes and Graham used Pugh as their source for this election. * Candidates' given names are from newspaper reports and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- At this election the party of Premier William Kidston, a composite of former Labour members and liberals formerly led by Arthur Morgan, won enough seats to retain office, with the grudging support of Labour. The Kidstonites won 25 seats, while Robert Philp's conservative opposition won 29, a gain of 13. Labour was the big loser (not surprisingly given the recent split), winning 18 seats, a loss of 16. Much as Labour members despised the turncoat Kidston, they had no choice but to support him against the conservatives. Kidston faced obstruction by the conservative majority in the unelected Legislative Council. In November he asked the Governor, Lord Chelmsford, to appoint more government supporters to the Council. When Chelmsford refused, Kidston resigned. Philp then formed a governmment, but the Kidstonite-Labour majority in the Assembly retaliated by blocking supply, forcing Philp to call an early election. This was the first Queensland election at which women had the vote, although they were still precluded from being candidates. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== At this election candidates endorsed by Premier William Kidston are described as Ministerialists. The press commonly refered to them as "Kidstonites." The opposition party led by Robert Philp were officially called Conservatives but were nearly always called Oppositionists or Philpites.
