QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FIFTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 27 AUGUST 1904 ==================================================================== The Fifteenth Parliament was opened on 4 January 1905 and dissolved on 11 April 1907 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Queensland Legislative Assembly, 1890-1964", checked against "Pugh's Almanac" of 1904. The results are identical in almost every seat (but see Fassifern). It is clear that Hughes and Graham used Pugh as their source for this election. * Candidates' given names are from newspaper reports and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The composite government led by Arthur Morgan won a convincing victory at this election. Labour emerged as the largest party for the first time, with 35 seats. Morgan's liberal supporters won 20, and the conservatives led by Arthur Rutledge were reduced to 16, with Rutledge himself among the defeated. After the election Robert Philp resumed leadership of the conservatives. George Kerr continued to lead the Labour Party, but William Kidston, the Treasurer, was the dominant force in both the Labour Party and the government. In January 1906 Morgan resigned to become President of the Legislative Council, and Kidston succeeded him as Premier. Leadership of the non-Labour wing of the government passed to Digby Denham. Labour suffered a heavy defeat in Queensland in the December 1906 federal election, and Kidston saw this as a rejection of Labour’s socialist objective (adopted in 1905), which he opposed. He decided to form a permanent alliance with the liberals, which he announced in his policy speech in Rockhampton in February 1907. The majority of the Labour Caucus followed him, effectively splitting the Labour Party. Since George Kerr supported Kidston, in April the 14 Labour members who signed the party platform chose David Bowman as their new leader. Denham, meanwhile, resigned from the government and joined the conservatives. Kidston's government passed an election bill which abolished plural voting and gave women the right to vote, although not to be elected to the Assembly. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== At this election non-Labour supporters of the Morgan government are classed as Ministerialists, while members of the conservative opposition are classed as Oppositionists.
