QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FOURTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 11 MARCH 1902 ==================================================================== The Fourteenth Parliament was opened on 8 July 1902 and dissolved on 21 July 1904 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Queensland Legislative Assembly, 1890-1964", checked against "Pugh's Almanac" of 1904. It is clear that Hughes and Graham used Pugh as their source for this election. (Obvious errors in Pugh at Fortitude Valley and Townsville have been uncitically copied by Hughes and Graham.) * Candidates' given names are from newspaper reports and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The conservative "continuous ministry" led by Premier Robert Philp was returned with an apparently comfortable majority at this election. Press accounts at the time gave the Ministerialists 41 seats to Labor's 25, with six Opposition or independent members. This proved an over-estimation of the Ministerialist strength. Hughes and Graham estimate 36 reliable Ministerialists to 28 Labour members and 8 others. Philp continued as Premier until September 1903, when he was nearly defeated in the Assembly on a taxation bill. He resigned and handed over to Arthur Morgan (who was a popular Speaker but had never held ministerial office). Given the unreliable Ministerialist numbers, Morgan formed a coalition with the Labour Party. This government held office until the 1904 election. On taking office in the Morgan ministry, W H Browne resigned as Labour leader. He was briefly succeeded by Peter Airey and then by George Kerr. Philp resigned as leader of the conservative opposition in June 1904 and was succeeded by Arthur Rutledge. This was the first election at which all polling took place on the same day. Dates of nomination and polling are no longer shown. This cannot be correct, since if only two candidates are left in a two- member seat they must be elected and there is no point in distributing contingent votes. The same error appears in "Pugh's Almanac," showing that Pugh was Hughes and Graham's source. The correct figures are taken from the "Brisbane Courier" (13 March). The "Courier"'s figures for the primary vote differ only slightly from those in Hughes and Graham. -------------------------------------------------------------------- John McMaster (1830-1924): Elected 1885 by, 1888, 1893, 1896.
