QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE THIRTEENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 1 TO 25 MARCH 1899 ==================================================================== The Thirteenth Parliament was opened on 11 April 1899 and dissolved on 4 February 1902 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Queensland Legislative Assembly, 1890-1964", and from "Pugh's Almanac" of 1900. These figures differ in a majority of seats. I have noted this only where there is a major discrepancy, in which cases I have checked newspaper sources. * Candidates' given names are from newspaper reports and the Queensland Parliament website. * Dates of nomination and polling are from the Queensland "Government Gazette." * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- The conservative government led by Premier James Dickson retained its comfortable majority at this election, winning 41 seats to Labor's 21. The non-Labour opposition group retained its 8 seats. In December 1899 Dickson resigned after his majority fell to one vote on a railways bill. The Governor then commissioned the Labour leader, Anderson Dawson, to form Queensland's (and the world's) first Labour government - although Dawson in fact first tried to form a coalition government with liberal opposition members such as Drake and Groom. Dawson's government was predicably defeated after only a week, and the conservatives returned to office under Robert Philp, who remained Premier until the 1902 election. The first federal election was held in March 1901, and eight members of the Assembly resigned on being elected to the federal Parliament, including Dawson, Glassey and Groom - the longest-serving member. Drake resigned from the Legislative Council. Dickson accepted office in Edmund Barton's federal ministry and was intending to contest the federal election, but died in January 1901. With Labour established as the official opposition, it is now possible to show the increase or decrease in the Labor vote between elections, although only in single-member seats. The uncertain meaning of the terms "Ministerial" and "Opposition" makes this not possible for non-Labour candidates.
