QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE TWELFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 10 MARCH TO 11 APRIL 1896 ==================================================================== The Twelfth Parliament was opened on 16 June 1896 and dissolved on 15 February 1899 Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from Colin A Hughes and B D Graham, "Voting for the Queensland Legislative Assembly, 1890-1964", and from "Pugh's Almanac" of 1899. In most cases these figures are identical. I have noted where they differ. * Candidates' given names are from newspaper reports and the Queensland Parliament website. * Dates of nomination and polling are from the Queensland "Government Gazette." * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hugh Nelson's conservative government was comfortably re-elected at this election. His supporters won 41 seats, a loss of only one. Labor led by Thomas Glassey gained four seats to hold 20, while the Opposition group led by James Drake gained one to hold eight. One Farmers member was elected. The number of independent members fell from seven to two. Nelson resigned in April 1898 and was succeeded by Thomas Byrnes. Byrnes died in October, and the government was then led by James Dickson until the 1899 election.
