QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE EIGHTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 4 NOVEMBER TO 10 DECEMBER 1878 ==================================================================== The Eighth Parliament was opened on 15 January 1879 and dissolved on 26 July 1883. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from newspaper reports (mainly the "Brisbane Courier"). * Dates of nomination and polling are from the "Queensland Government Gazette." * Candidates' given names and biographies are from newspaper reports, the "Queensland Government Gazette" and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- John Douglas's premiership ended in January 1879 when he was found guilty of contempt for leaking details of a select committee hearing to the press. He was succeeded by the conservative leader Thomas McIlwraith, who over the next decade became the dominant figure of Queensland politics. McIlwraith's aggressive style kept his government in office until the 1883 election. The 1978 Elctoral Districts Act divided the colony into 42 electorates, with 13 two-member seats, giving a membership of 55. There were 31 by-elections during this five-year parliament. VOTING BY CONSTITUENCY ==================================================================== Members are described as Ministerialists, Oppositionists or Independents, according to the list published in the "Western Champion" on 19 October 1883. Since the list was published in 1883, it does not include members elected in 1878 who had left the Parliament before 1883, but it does include members elected at by- elections between 1878 and 1883.
