QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 14 SEPTEMBER TO 6 OCTOBER 1868 ==================================================================== The Fourth Parliament was opened on 18 November 1868 and dissolved on 13 July 1870. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from newspaper reports (mainly the "Brisbane Courier"). * Dates of nomination and polling are from the "Queensland Government Gazette." * Candidates' given names and biographies are from newspaper reports, the "Queensland Government Gazette" and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. * The number of voters on the electoral roll for each District comes from a list published in the "Brisbane Courier", 2 September 1867. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- After the election Robert Mackenzie found that his position had not been improved, and promptly resigned. Charles Lilley, an advanced liberal, then formed a government. But he did not command a solid liberal majority and his government achieved little. In May 1870 he was defeated in the House and the conservative Arthur Palmer formed a government. Aware of his narrow base of support, Palmer called another election in July.
