QUEENSLAND ==================================================================== LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ==================================================================== THE SECOND PARLIAMENT ELECTED 30 MAY TO 27 JUNE 1863 ==================================================================== The Second Parliament was opened on 22 July 1863 and dissolved on 29 May 1867. Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------- * Voting figures are from newspaper reports (mainly the "Brisbane Courier"). * Dates of nomination and polling are from the "Queensland Government Gazette." * Candidates' given names and biographies are from newspaper reports, the "Queensland Government Gazette" and the Queensland Parliament website. * The principal polling places for each electorate are from the "Queensland Government Gazette". Some polling places served more than one electorate. Summary -------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Herbert's conservative government retained the support of a majority of members elected at this election. Herbert himself failed to win the prestigious Brisbane seat, but was returned for West Moreton. By 1865 he was increasingly weary of colonial politics. In February 1866 he resigned, and was succeeded by his loyal supporter Arthur Macalister. In July, however, the colony's finances were put at risk by a bank failure in London. The Governor, Sir George Bowen, promptly forced Macalister's resignation and recalled Herbert, who used his connections to secure fresh loans. His work done, Herbert resigned again in August, and returned to Britain. Macalister resumed office and retained it until the 1866 election. The Additional Members Act of 1864 created six new electorates in newly-settled areas (Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego), which were filled at elections in March 1865. The Committee upheld the petition, but declared the election of both Edmonstone and Warry (and, by extension, of Brookes) void. His petition against Warry was upheld, but since the election as a whole was declared void, he cannot have been awarded Warry's seat. Nevertheless both the "Government Gazette" (17 September) and the Queensland Parliament website refer to him as a member. -------------------------------------------------------------------- EASTERN DOWNS ==================================================================== Leyburn, Warwick -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nominations 6 June, polling 9 June 1863 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- John D McLEAN * Unopposed -------------------------------------------------------------------- John Donald McLean (1820-66): Elected 1862 by, 1863 Died 16 December 1866: see by-election -------------------------------------------------------------------- Colonial Treasurer 20 July 1866 to 7 August 1866 -------------------------------------------------------------------- FORTITUDE VALLEY, HAMLET OF ==================================================================== Fortitude Valley -------------------------------------------------------------------- Nominations 5 June, polling 6 June 1863 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Candidate Party Votes % -------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Cribb * 64 31.4 Charles LILLEY * 140 68.6 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 204 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Cribb was MLA for Brisbane 1860-63.
